The WAX BUDDY was born 5 years ago by three hardcore surfers in the North East coast of the United States where water dips below 30 degrees and 6 mil wetsuits with boots, gloves, and hoods are the norm.  You can truly say that the WAX BUDDY was designed by surfers for surfers.

Our story begins with Ron DiMauro, an Architect and surfer who designs award winning seaside homes.  He is a traditional long boarder and his quiver consists of boards ranging from 9-6” nose riders to an 11’ log rider (lots of wax from head to toe).  This means lots of cleaning and scraping of old, heavy, sand filled, dirty wax.

One day, while scraping his board, Ron had to stop because his fingers went numb due to the pressure of the teeth digging into the palm of his hand (we all know this feeling when we use traditional wax combs).  He knew there must be a better way to clean and scrape his board, so he tried everything from kitchen spatulas to credit cards but nothing seemed to work. It was at this time that he decided to design his own wax comb.

People told him, it is just a wax comb, don’t waste your time or money on it but he knew, if he could make a better one, surfers would appreciate it and it would make cleaning your board fun again.  (Also faster so we can get into the water quicker and isn’t this the whole point!)

Ron knew the difference was that his product needed a handle so surfers could grip the wax comb and get the leverage needed to scrape off the wax.  He went to the local hardware store and bought a simple putty knife.  He used it as his basic design but reshaped it, stiffened it up to make it stronger and had one made out of 100% recycled plastic because of his love of the environment.

He showed this product to his project architects (two of them surfers as well) and they all agreed to “go for it” and try to sell this product to surf shops.  They started a company called ENDLESS WAVE and send out the WAX BUDDY to 1000 surf shops in the United States.  They asked them to be honest and let them know what they liked about it and what they did not.  They received lots of comments on how to make it the perfect wax comb.  The end result was a much beefier, shorter and thicker version.  The WAX BUDDY became the perfect three in one surf accessary tool:  1. a wax comb,  2. a wax scraper and  3. a rail cleaner.

They sent this new and improved WAX BUDDY back to the 1000 shops and something incredible happened, about 95% of the shops ordered a case on the spot.  The shop owners really appreciated that we sincerely listened to their comments.  I guess we can say that the WAX BUDDY was designed by all of us – a community of surfers, shapers, shop owners as well as three dedicated surfers from the North East coast who had a dream and would not quit on it.
